Comics in the Classroom
What?
Halftone allows users to easily transform photographs into comic book page photographs. Users can customize their comic book with various layouts, filters, stickers, and effects. Creators can download their work and share it with others in one simple click!
So what?
While the final product of a comic may be short, the planning and creation process is quite lengthy. Comic writing requires students to go through each step of the writing cycle; ending in a published piece. A comic requires its writer(s) to question the main ideas being presented and how best to communicate the information in a condensed format. Students can demonstrate their knowledge of broad topics, such as the Apollo 11 Mission, or skills, such as incorporating alliteration in their writing, through the creation of a comic. Apps such as Halftone allow students to bring their writing to life!
I have created a model comic using the Halftone app in which I demonstrate my understanding of onomatopoeia and showcase my ability to incorporate it with my writing.
ISTE Standards:
-
“Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity.”
-
“Design and develop digital-age learning experiences and assessments.”
Now what?
Apps like Halftone allow students to present their work in a comic book format. Users are limited in the number of pages and frames provided, as well as the amount of text used. This requires students to identify the main idea of which they are trying to present, as well as ways to communicate their thinking using only photographs and a few short words and/or phrases. Students could create a comic demonstrating their understanding of a text, practice new vocabulary, or write a How-To piece in comic form. Students could use Halftone and apps alike to demonstrate their knowledge of a particular skill or concept. Educators could also introduce new information to students, such as how the Moon was formed, in comic book form. This style of presentation is bound to captivate students’ attention!
